Day 2, Sofia-Rila Monastery-Plovdiv

Rila Monastery the biggest Monastery in Bulgaria. It was founded by the most respected Bulgarian saint-anchorite Ivan Rilski (876-946). Its museum exhibition is one of the richest and most valuable collections on the Balkans. The Monastery has the UNESCO status of an international cultural monument.

Day 3, Plovdiv-Kazanlak-Stara Zagora

Kazanlak Valley of roses - Kazanlak Valley is located between the Balkan and Central forest and is known for its beauty and fertility. Distance to Sofia 220 km. In the valley far Tundzha River flows. Famous by the production of rose oil, the city is known like The Capital of the rose.

Rose Festival, Kazanlak - The Bulgarian rose production is popularised every year during the Festival of Roses. It is one of the most remarkable events in Bulgaria, dedicated to beauty and flowers, to spring and the fragrance of the priceless Kazanlak rose. The Rose Festival was celebrated for the first time in 1903 and since then it has traditionally been held during the first weekend of June. This is the season when the gentle oleaginous Kazanlak rose comes to bloom, filling the air with its scent. Nowadays the Rose Festival has evolved into an international event where thousands of tourists and guests of the town are entertained.

The Church of the Nativity is also known as St. Nikolay, as it has a dual dedication. Completed in 1902 at the Shipka Monastery, it is a memorial to liberation from Ottoman rule and to those whose lives were lost in the battle at Shipka Pass in the Russian-Turkish War (1877/78). The battle was the turning point in the war.

Thracian Tomb Goliama Kosmatka - The Tomb of the Thracian Tsar Sevt III is situated in the Golyamata Kosmatka mound, at a distance of 1 km south from the town of Shipka north from the town of Kazanlak. It was found in 2004. The Tomb was built in the second half of 5th century BC. A remarkable thing is the bronze head of the statue of Sevt III buried ritually in front of the façade, which is quite detailed. It is an important evidence of the Thracian Orphic rituals. The tomb temple consists of a corridor, an anteroom, a round chamber with high tholos cover and a rectangular chamber, constructed as a sarcophagus by two monolith blocks, one of which weighs more than 60 tones. The three halls are built of rectangular stone blocks and are covered with slabs. A two-winged marble door closes the entrance to the round chamber. The upper plains of the wings are decorated with images of God Dionysus, as in the east part he is an embodiment of the sun, and in the west of the earth and the night.

The tomb is a part of the Valley of the Thracian Kings, which also includes the Kazanlak tomb, as well as the tombs and the temples found in the mounds Goliama Arsenalka, Shushmanets, Helvetsia, Grifoni, Svetitsa and Ostrusha.

Museum of Rose -The museum is situated in the old building of the Rose Institute. It has unique artifacts associated with traditional production of rose oil from 1660 until today, photos, documents rich material and spiritual culture of the Kazanlak region.

3-th Day, Discover Bulgaria,Plovdiv-Kazanlak-Nesebar
  • Visit of Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak.

Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak- It is one of the most valuable monument of Thracian architecture and art from the end of the 4 and the beginning of the 3 BC. It was found in 1944 in a mould near the town of Kazanluk. It has a richly painted rectangular entrance hall, a narrow gallery and a brick burial chamber with a dome. Two techniques were used in the decoration wet fresco and distemper technique. On the frieze in the gallery a combat scene with a lot of figures is depicted.The wall paintings from the main frieze arebetween two bands of ornaments. They represent a unique scene, in which the deified deceased and his wife are having a funeral feast and a lot of servants, musicians, guards, coachmen are serving them. Such images are a very important resource of information for the way of life, clothes, appearance and imagination of the Thracian people.This is the best preservedmonumentofThracianart inBulgariaand one of the few masterpieces of antique painting we have today.

BOJENTZI - This architectural and historic complex is situated in the central part of Stara planina. It is a picturesque place, preserving the atmosphere of old times. It combines incredible views, beautiful Balkan architecture and the hospitality of local people. The village of Bojentzi is a place which can bring you back in time and make you feel the authentic Bulgarian past. The village itself is founded in the beginning of Ottoman rule. During the siege of the city of Turnovo (the old capital) a lady managed to escape together with some of her entourage. She chose that sheltered place in the Balkan and a village was founded, named after her - Bojentzi from Bojana. Distance from Gabrovo 17 km.

ETARA Architectural ethnographic complex "Etar" is the first one of this type in Bulgaria. He was found on the 7 of September 1964 year. The museum is situated 8 km South of Gabrovo. It consist 10 objects and its one of the most riches and well kept active technical collection around the European museums on the open air. This is the reason the water wheel to be the emblem to the Etar.The most important specialty to the collection is that all objects are in action as it was it the past. The craftsman trade street offers 16 models to the Balkan architecture, showing the original talant to Revival builders.The preliminary design and methodology were done by the Gabrovian Lazar Donkov (1908 - 1976) who was also the first director of the museum.If you want to feel the whiff of the past, to see the miraculous power of the water, flowing in a chute, to enjoy the Renaissance architecture, to observe ancient national customs, then visit the Ethnographical Open Air museum "Etar.
